Broward County Free Heart Screening Program Returns for Coral Springs Residents |

Mar 27, 2026
The Broward County free heart screening program is relaunching, giving Coral Springs residents access to advanced cardiac imaging at no cost — part of a renewed $4 million preventive health initiative.
Now operating as the Broward County/Florida Panthers Preventive Heart Program, the effort is funded by more than $3 million in remaining county allocations from an original $10 million investment, along with an additional $1 million contribution from the Florida Panthers Foundation.
The screenings are designed to detect early signs of cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death in the United States.
What the Broward County Free Heart Screening Includes
The primary test offered is a coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) — a specialized CT scan that can detect plaque buildup in the heart’s arteries, including soft plaque that may not yet be hardened.
For individuals who cannot receive contrast dye, a CT calcium score test may be available.
These types of imaging tests are not always routinely covered by insurance.
If early plaque buildup is detected, physicians can recommend lifestyle adjustments or treatment options to reduce future risk.
Who Is Eligible
County officials are encouraging adults ages 45 and older to speak with their personal physician about whether the screening is appropriate.
Applications will open soon.

Why This Matters Locally
Programs like this are designed to shift health care from reactive to preventive.
Advanced imaging is typically ordered only after symptoms appear. This initiative allows eligible residents to screen earlier — potentially identifying risks before they become emergencies.
Insider Layer: If you’re considering applying, schedule a conversation with your physician before the application window opens. Having that discussion in advance makes the process smoother and helps determine whether CCTA or calcium scoring is appropriate for you.
After receiving results, participants are encouraged to review them with their doctor to determine next steps.
Preventive programs often operate in cycles based on available funding. Once application periods open, appointment slots may fill quickly.
This isn’t a crisis announcement.
It’s an opportunity.
And for many residents 45 and older, it may be one worth understanding sooner rather than later. Learn more here.
