Coral Springs High School has quietly developed one of the largest game design and simulation programming programs in South Florida, giving students a pathway into technology careers while still in high school.
What began as an experimental course more than a decade ago has grown into a robust part of the school’s Career and Technical Education department.
Today, students in the program learn programming, animation, digital design, and interactive storytelling while building their own playable games.
From Experimental Course to Established Program
The program started as a small, experimental class designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of programming and digital design.
Over time, interest grew as students discovered they could combine creativity with technical skills while developing their own games.
As the curriculum expanded, the course evolved into a full pathway within the school’s Career and Technical Education offerings, attracting students interested in technology, design, and digital storytelling.
Students Build Real Programming and Design Skills
Students begin by learning basic programming concepts and game design principles. As they advance through the program, projects become more complex, requiring collaboration, problem-solving, and creative thinking.
Advanced students develop more sophisticated projects while preparing for industry certification exams.
Along the way, they gain practical experience in programming, animation, web design, and digital media development.
Competition Wins and Scholarship Opportunities
The program has also produced strong competitive results.
Coral Springs High students have won regional competitions in game design, animation, web design, entrepreneurship, and other technology-focused categories.
For many students, the experience has opened doors beyond the classroom.
Graduates have gone on to earn college scholarships and pursue careers in fields such as cybersecurity, software engineering, artificial intelligence, and digital media.
A Space for Collaboration and Creative Learning
Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the program also became an important space for students to reconnect socially while continuing to develop technical skills.
Teachers say the collaborative nature of game design encourages teamwork, communication, and creative experimentation.
Students often work together to solve programming challenges, design gameplay experiences, and refine projects through trial and error.
Preparing Students for the Future Tech Workforce
School leaders say the continued growth of the program reflects increasing demand for technology education across Broward County and beyond.
As industries across the country seek workers with programming and digital design skills, initiatives like Coral Springs High’s gaming and simulation program are helping prepare the next generation of technology professionals.
For many students, the program provides an early introduction to fields that are expected to shape the future workforce.
