When Gratitude Is Stitched by Hand in Coral Springs

Most expressions of gratitude happen in passing. A handshake. A thank-you. A ceremony.

In Coral Springs this month, gratitude took hundreds of hours, and thousands of stitches.

The Coral Springs Quilt Guild honored 12 local veterans during a special ceremony aligned with National Quilts of Valor Sew Day.

Each veteran was wrapped in a handmade quilt created by guild members, part of a nationwide effort through the Quilts of Valor Foundation to recognize service members and veterans touched by war.

The moment was simple and powerful: a quilt placed around each veteran’s shoulders, a label stitched with their name, and the piece officially recorded in the national registry.

What Most People Don’t See

Behind every quilt is a quiet infrastructure of volunteers.

Guild members select patterns, cut fabric, piece layers, and sew each quilt by hand. Materials are often donated. Designs are chosen intentionally. The process can take weeks.

The result is not just a blanket, but a symbolic gesture of comfort and acknowledgment.

Veterans representing multiple branches were honored, including members of the U.S. Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and Navy. Each received a tote bag with care instructions to preserve the handmade keepsake.

Why This Keeps Happening

The Quilts of Valor Foundation began in 2003 with a simple idea: that comfort and recognition should not fade after a service member returns home.

Local guilds like the Coral Springs Quilt Guild carry that mission forward, month after month.

They meet on the first Saturday of each month at St. Mary Magdalene and St. Martin Episcopal Church on Riverside Drive, continuing a tradition that blends craftsmanship with civic gratitude.

Why It Matters Long After This Week

Cities often celebrate service on holidays. Volunteer groups sustain it in between.

In a growing city shaped by planning, development, and new initiatives, it is easy to overlook the quieter organizations that reinforce community values through steady, hands-on work.

In Coral Springs, some of that work is measured not in headlines, but in stitches.
