How Coral Springs Is Using Public Art to Mark America’s 250th Anniversary

Most public art projects arrive quietly. A sculpture appears. A mural is unveiled. People notice it in passing without always knowing how it got there or why it exists in that place.

In Coral Springs, a new citywide public art initiative tied to America’s 250th anniversary offers a clearer look at how those decisions are made and what they are meant to do long after a celebration ends.

The city is planning a yearlong installation of large-scale public artworks across several civic spaces, including City Hall, Mullins Park, and Veterans Park.

The installations are expected to debut in spring 2026 and remain on display for one year, with the possibility that one piece or series could become permanent.

Rather than functioning as a single event, the project is designed to unfold gradually across everyday spaces residents already use.

How the Project Is Being Funded

One of the least visible parts of public art is also one of the most important.

This initiative is funded through public art fees paid by private developers, a mechanism Coral Springs uses to support cultural projects without drawing from general tax revenue.

Those fees are earmarked specifically for public art and are overseen through the city’s established Public Art Program.

That structure allows the city to commission meaningful work while keeping long-term planning separate from short-term budget pressures.

It also ensures that new development contributes to the shared visual and cultural environment of the city.

Where the Art Will Appear and Why It Matters

The selected locations are not accidental.

City Hall, Mullins Park, and Veterans Park were chosen for their visibility and the way residents naturally pass through them during daily routines and community events.

The artworks will also be highlighted during major gatherings, including the city’s May 1 community concert and Fourth of July celebrations.

The goal is not to create a destination that requires effort to visit, but to integrate art into the flow of civic life so that it becomes part of how the city feels, not just how it looks.

What Happens Behind the Scene

The Public Art Committee is overseeing a formal artist selection process, including a call inviting professional visual artists to submit existing works that align with the project’s themes.

By using an established review process, the city balances artistic freedom with public accountability. Final selections and installation details are expected to be determined through public meetings in the months ahead.

At the conclusion of the exhibition, city officials may choose to permanently install one artwork or series at Veterans Park, extending the impact beyond the anniversary year.

Why This Matters Beyond 2026

Public art often reveals itself slowly.

Residents may not immediately connect a sculpture or installation to a specific policy, committee, or funding rule. But over time, these pieces shape how public spaces are experienced and remembered.

This project reflects how Coral Springs approaches civic identity: through systems that emphasize planning, accessibility, and shared ownership rather than one-time spectacle.

Long after the anniversary year passes, the choices made now will influence how residents encounter art in their daily lives and how the city continues to define itself in public space.
